History of Nexgrill

The history of Nexgrill Industries Inc. goes way back to 1993 in California. The company was first known as a supplier of the best indoor and outdoor furniture but later also produced cast iron products, heaters, stainless steel supplies, and burners.

As years passed, Nexgrill evolved its services and started making grills. Soon, the company became one of the frontrunners in grillers and other grilling accessories.

Nexgrill now has two lines of grills offered:

  • Evolution
  • Revelry

Both lines offer excellent quality, design, and features that you can depend on throughout your cooking process.

History of Char-Broil

Char-Broil started way before Nexgrill, founded in 1948 with the production of their first cast-iron grill.

From that one grill, Char-Broil became a well-known manufacturer of grills that are easy to use, convenient, and comfortable.

One of their most significant innovations that most barbecue experts love until now is their TRU infrared cooking system, allowing food to cook fast in extremely high heat. And this is all thanks to their partnering with Thermal Engineering Corporation in 2003.

With the brand’s increasing popularity, they acquired several companies like New Braunfels Smoker Company in 1997, Oklahoma Joe’s in 1998, Dancook, and SABER.

Nexgrill 4-Burner Propane Gas Grill

The Nexgrill 4-Burner Propane Gas Grill is an excellent entry-level grill if you’re still getting the hang of grilling. It’s affordable and can get you started in practicing skills without breaking the bank.

This four-burner grill is considered a medium-sized grill, offering a total of 644 square inches of cooking space. That’s a really good size if you have a large family or you’re serving a large barbecue party with your friends.

We love that the grill offers a 2-level set-up with 462 square inches primary cooking area and a 182 square inches warming rack. This allows you to become more versatile in your cooking. If the cooking area is too hot for your vegetables, you can grill them on the upper level instead.

The four stainless steel burners provide a powerful heat output of 48,000 BTUs, giving you a wide temperature range to smoke food, sear meat, grill, and try other cooking techniques. You also have a 12,000 BTUs side burner that you can use to create beautiful sears on your meat.

The stainless steel cooking grids make it even easier to get high heat. They also provide excellent heat retention and even heat distribution throughout the whole cooking process.

Perhaps one thing that we really love about this Nexgrill 4-burner grill is the angled flame tamers. It’s a really good feature that helps prevent flare-ups and build-up of smoke. Every grease that drips on the tamers evaporates and goes back to the meat, enhancing the flavor of your food.

We’re also a great fan of closed cart design grill because it helps protect the inside of the grill from outside elements. The grill also provides two side tables, giving you extra space for your tools. If you need the side burner, then you only have one side table to use.

One significant concern we have about this grill is that it looks pretty light compared to its size. So, there’s really a big issue with the quality of the materials, but again, if you’re looking for something to get you started without spending much and you have a large family, this is a good quality grill.

Pros

  • Large cooking space
  • Even heat cooking system
  • Powerful heat output
  • Angled flame tamers

Cons

  • Might have some durability concerns

Char-Broil Performance 4-Burner Grill

The Char-Broil Performance 4-Burner Grill is a good quality grill that comes with an affordable price tag, which is quite expected on Char-Broil grills.

The grill is medium-sized, offering a total cooking area of 660 square inches. This includes 475 square inches of primary cooking area and a 150 square inches warming rack. This is perfect in providing you great versatility on what to cook.

The four stainless steel burners produce a powerful heat output of 36,000 BTUs throughout the cooking surface. In other words, you get to have a wide temperature range, and you can set the grill at high heat fast.

Each burner comes with its own control knob, making it possible for you to control temperatures independently. You can lower temperatures on one side while higher on the other side to get your desired cook on a different menu.

The grill comes with porcelain-coated grates that help a lot on the even heat distribution, preventing possibilities of hot and cold spots on your grill. There’s also a side-burner that offers a powerful 10,000 BTUs heat output, in case you need to sear meat at very high heat.

The side burner can also be used as a side table when not in use, giving you extra space. But of course, there’s also another side table on the other side of the grill for balance. Added to that, it’s a closed-cabinet grill, which protects the grill from outside elements.

Other features we love are the locking swivel wheels, so it’s easy to move around, an effective grease management system, an electronic igniter for easy start-up, and a lid-mounted temperature gauge for easy temperature monitoring.

One downside is that the grill is on the lighter side. So there may be some noticeable durability issues, such as some parts being flimsy. But when used correctly, this grill can last for years.

Pros

  • Overall stainless steel construction
  • Large cooking space
  • Even heat distribution
  • Powerful side burner
  • Easy to clean
  • Easy start-up

Cons

  • Hard to assemble

In-depth Comparison of Both Models

Now that we’ve taken a look at the grill’s features in detail, let us compare the two models based on their:

  • Grilling Area
  • Temperature
  • Design and Construction
  • Price
  • Warranty

Grilling Area

Let’s start with the grilling area.

The Nexgrill 4-Burner Propane Gas Grill offers a total cooking area of 644 square inches, while the Char-Broil Performance 4-Burner Grill offers a total cooking area of 660 square inches. So, there’s really not much of a difference between the two.

Both grills are perfect for large-sized families or big barbecue parties with friends. They also offer a two-level set-up because they include a primary cooking space and a warming rack, so you can actually be very versatile with it.

We also love how each grill provides a side-burner for extra cooking space if you need to sear meat.

So, whichever you choose between the two, it’s up to you.

Temperature/BTUs

Next, let’s check out the temperature.

The Nexgrill 4-Burner Propane Gas Grill provides a powerful heat output of 48,000 BTUs from its main burners and an additional 12,000 BTUs from its side burner. So, that’s around 60,000 BTUs on one grill.

The Char-Broil Performance 4-Burner Grill, on the other hand, provides a heat output of 36,000 BTUs from its main burners and an additional 10,000 BTUs from the side burners. So, that’s only a total of 46,000 BTUs.

It’s actually apparent to see that the Nexgrill provides a higher heat than the Char-Broil. So, if you want a grill that offers a wide temperature range, then this can be a good choice.

However, despite the lower heat output, the Char-Broil still heats up at a desirable temperature. Thanks to its porcelain-coated cast-iron grate, the grill heats up fast, and there’s excellent heat retention and even heat distribution.

Design & Construction

Looking at the two grills, you’ll immediately notice that they look the same. You have four burners, two side tables, one side burner, a two-level set-up, and a closed-cart design. Both grills use stainless steel materials overall, and both look very nice.

The Nexgrill has a bigger footprint than the Char-Broil, so this may not be the perfect choice for you if you have limited space.

Other than the design, what we really need to look at is the quality of the materials. We’ve mentioned above that both grills are lightweight, which is good in terms of portability.

However, between the two, we can say that the Char-Broil has better quality. The Nexgrill is larger, but it weighs less than the Char-Broil, making it a lot flimsy than the latter.

Price

Both grills are within the same price range, but the Char-Broil is a little bit cheaper than the Nexgrill one. There’s only a bit of price difference, but enough to help you make a buying decision depending on your budget.

Overall, the price of both grills is very reasonable, considering their quality and features.

Warranty

Lastly, let’s take a look at the warranty offered by each manufacturer.

For the Nexgrill 4-Burner Gas grill, Nexgrill offers a limited 1-year warranty on the overall grill and its cooking grates. This may not sound much, but the main burners do have a 5-year warranty, which is great.

The Char-Broil Performance 4-Burner Gas Grill, on the other hand, also offers a 5-year warranty on its burners, a 2-year warranty on the firebox, and a 1-year warranty on its grates and other parts.

So, they are also almost a tie when it comes to warranty, with Char-Broil having a bit of an edge over the Nexgrill.

Our Verdict

Both grills are undeniably two of the best in the market today. If you’re a beginner and you’re looking for an entry-level grill that’s affordable and easy to use, these are two grills you can choose from.

However, between the two, we prefer the Char-Broil Performance 4-Burner Gas Grill. This is mainly because it has more durable parts, it offers a more extended warranty on the firebox, it’s easier to clean, and it’s easier to set up.

But do note that there’s really not much difference between the two grills. If you prefer a more powerful heat output, then the Nexgrill 4-Burner grill would be a good option as well.

So, it really depends on what you think would suit you best.
